Spice Route
Kitchen.
A modular kraft-paper takeaway system for a Pune cloud kitchen — designed to survive transit, photograph well on Instagram, and feel hospitable enough to keep customers ordering twice a week.
The brief.
Spice Route launched as a cloud kitchen — no storefront, no signage, no waiter handing you the menu. Every customer touchpoint had to live on the packaging itself. The brief was to design a system that could carry the brand into the front door without a host to introduce it.
Three constraints shaped the work. The food had to arrive warm after 25 minutes on a delivery bike. The unboxing had to photograph well, since 40% of new customers were arriving via Instagram. And the cost per unit had to land under ₹14 at a launch volume of 200 orders a day, with headroom to halve as we hit 500.
The approach.
We started with structure, not graphics. We prototyped three box form factors at the workshop, food-tested each with a sample menu, and timed how each held heat after 25 minutes on a scooter. The winner was a nesting two-piece kraft system — the outer carrier doubles as a tray for serving; the inner cells keep wet and dry items apart.
For the brand surface, we used a single colour run on uncoated FSC-certified kraft to keep cost predictable. The mark sits small and confident in the centre. Around it, a hand-set typographic strip carries dish name, batch code, and the chef's signature — built once as a template, swapped out per dish in production.
Procurement and print were specified together. We named the paper, the press, the die, and the courier-grade glue in a single sourcing document, then ran a 5,000-unit pilot with the chosen printer before signing off the production run.
The outcome.
The system launched on schedule and held up across the first three months of trading. Customer photos started appearing on Instagram in the first week — exactly the brand-on-the-doorstep effect the brief was chasing.
More importantly, the procurement work let the per-unit cost land below the brief's ceiling, with a clear path to the ₹7 target as volumes climb. Reorders settled into a steady rhythm; the operations team reports zero complaints about food temperature on arrival.
